Record Employment and Unemployment
Ireland achieved historic milestones in its labour market this year:
Unemployment Rate: At just 4.1% in November 2024, Ireland boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU, well below the EU area average of 6.4%.
Employment Numbers: Over 2.7 million people are working in Ireland, with 96,800 jobs added in the year leading to Q3 2024.
Labour Force Participation: The employment rate reached an impressive 80.3%, outperforming the EU average of 75.9%.
These figures reflect the success of Ireland's policies in fostering economic growth and addressing workforce challenges, ensuring opportunities across diverse sectors.
Employment Permits
2024 also set records for employment permits, addressing Ireland’s tight labour market and critical skills shortages:
38,189 permits issued, a 24% increase from 2023.
Top sectors benefiting from permits:
Healthcare: Over 12,000 permits for nurses and healthcare assistants.
ICT: 6,500 permits for roles in data science, AI, and other tech specializations.
Agriculture and Culinary Arts: 3,500 permits for agriculture and nearly 3,000 for chefs.
Nationalities: Workers from India (13,147), Brazil (4,458), the Philippines (3,944), China (1,903), and Pakistan (1,690) topped the list, reflecting Ireland’s global workforce diversity.
More than half of the new permits were for Critical Skills Employment, with average salaries reaching €58,746. Furthermore, Dublin’s share of employment permits fell below 50% in 2024, signalling a more balanced regional development in other counties.
Supporting Workforce Inclusion and Skill Development
Government initiatives have focused on building a more inclusive, adaptable workforce:
Upskilling and Reskilling: Investments in education and training programs empower workers to transition into high-demand roles.
Diversity and Inclusion: Efforts to close gender and age gaps are helping women and older workers secure meaningful employment.
Looking Ahead: Building on Success
Minister Peter Burke summarized Ireland’s achievements succinctly: "2024 marks a year of outstanding progress in the Irish labour market." With strong policies, technological advancements, and a global approach to workforce development, Ireland is poised to continue its trajectory of economic success into 2025 and beyond. As policies and frameworks evolve, particularly around employment permits and remuneration, employers and professionals must stay informed and plan strategically for the future.
