What happens after I submit my 1G extension application

Following a series of campaigns by the international student community and our office, the Department of Justice has agreed to process Stamp 1G extension applications in June. Our office has gotten a direct response on this as per our article. We are currently assisting many Stamp 1G holders in making this application.

We are delighted to see many of our clients successfully obtaining their extensions. One of our clients has kindly agreed to share the result of her application which she received today. She has been successfully granted a 12-months extension on her Stamp 1G, see letter attached.

A very common question we are asked by our clients is; what happens after my Stamp 1G extension application is submitted?

  1. The current waiting time can be up to 1-2 months. Once your application is processed and approved, the Department of Justice will write a letter back to you to inform you of the duration of the 1G extension, see attached.

  2. You will be required to renew your Stamp 1G IRP card as per usual.

  • If you are based in Dublin, you will need to renew online here. You will need to fill out an online form and upload a copy of your passport bio page, IRP card, medical insurance, academic transcript and the extension approval letter you received. You will be required to pay a €300 fee online and your new IRP card will be posted out to you in 2-3 weeks. So it's recommended that you apply for this renewal 1 month in advance of your current IRP expiry date when you receive your extension approval letter.

  • If you are based outside of Dublin, you will need to contact your local immigration office to arrange a time to renew, using the same documents.

Note:

Immigration Service Delivery, Department of Justice have decided to discontinue the systematic stamping of passports for those people who apply to renew their registration in this State. There is therefore no longer a requirement for applicants using the online renewal system, to submit their passport or IRP Card by post. If an application is granted, a new IRP card will follow by Express Post within 5-10 working days. This card will serve as the basis for your permission to reside in the State.
